Good pace and repetition of key concepts makes for solid understanding of Procreate. There is plenty of theory, but very importantly, there are opportunities to practice the skills, with set projects and tasks, which really solidifies the learning. A relaxed and laid back delivery makes the leaner feel at ease from the get go. I'm very pleased I signed up for this one! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise!- Lora Cannon
I personally loved this course a lot. No wonder why it’s a bestseller! So, firstly I have to admit that I learned some new things and I’m thankful for them. For instance, I loved the Blend Mode explanations and it has helped me understand them even better. One of the best things about this course is learning through projects. You’ll be working on 10 projects throughout the course to master the basics and advanced techniques.
I loved almost everything about this course except that I found the topics to be a bit messy. You’ll find some of the fundamental lessons after section 9 including the animation and lettering basics. So, I highly recommend you to go through the modules first to see which module contains which topics.
Aside from that, it’s a great course for someone completely new to digital drawing. Even if you can already make digital drawings, it should be helpful for you too as this course covers all the basics of Procreate from setting up your canvas to blending, highlighting, using perspectives, and more!
Loved this course! I learned so much for being brand new to Procreate. I would just hope that the course continues to be updated with new information as the app updates. It was great to learn by doing and it helped me see how much more I could do if pushed. Highly recommend this course.- Emily Leonard
This course seemed to be the most popular Procreate course on Udemy. It has the highest rating and number of students so I was kind of curious about it. At first, I thought it has only 7 sections, how will it cover all the topics? But it seems like you'll find a whole bunch of things in each lesson.
In this course, you’ll learn everything you need to know about the basic tools, brushes, colors, layers, blend modes, perspective drawing, and some other cool features of Procreate to get you started. Throughout the course, you’ll get practical drawing examples to understand the features with more clarity which will be really effective for you if you’re new to digital drawing.
You’ll also learn to make comic strips and there will be a final project to apply all your skills. But, the course hasn’t been updated to version 5 yet. But that shouldn’t be a problem as it covers the core features of Procreate.
This is a very beginner-friendly course. If you have little to no drawing experience at all, you might have fun doing this course and at the same time, you can build a strong foundation of the basics of making digital art with Procreate. You’ll also get to learn some of the advanced features of Procreate including isometric drawing, using effects, and animation.
Outstanding. Exceeded my expectations. Perfect level of content for absolute beginner but then delves into detail. It greatly shortened my learning curve so I don't have to figure it all out myself. Thorough. Great tips and techniques. Very clearly explained, easy to follow speaking speed and style. The only suggestion I can make is to circle menu options which would help viewers quickly focus. Thank you! I feel so prepared now.- J Kocar
To be honest, at first, I planned not to write a review on this course as it was not updated but glad I gave it a second chance, and guess what! Most Probably it got updated just the day before I wrote this.
Now, coming to the course, it actually covers all the basics and essential tools you need to get a grip on to start making digital art with Procreate, as the instructor claims. This includes an overview of the Procreate interface, creating canvases, drawing tools essentials, layers, drawing guides, perspective, isometric drawing, textures, and more!
This course also covers color and image adjustment features which I haven’t found in any other course in such a detailed manner yet. The other topics are also explained descriptively so you’ll have a clear idea of what each tool does and how to use them more efficiently.
If you’re acquainted with digital drawing and you only want to learn about the various tools and features of Procreate then this could be a good choice for you.
I've taken quite a few Procreate courses on Udemy, and while they all had their merits, this was by far the best. Some courses teach you the functions without much advice on how to apply it artistically. Other courses give many examples of application but have left me wanting in terms of understanding the technical aspects of a very complex app.- Frank Feliciano
This course is great for anyone who wants to start digital drawing. In this course, I loved how the sections are arranged. You can easily go to specific chapters according to your needs. If you want to focus on mastering the use of brushes or shading or even if you just want to get acquainted with the basic tools go to the specific sections and you’re most likely to find everything you need to know.
This is a very digital drawing-friendly course. If you’re a beginner at digital drawing, blend modes can be quite intimidating but this course has a whole section of 25 lectures dedicated to that. So, your idea of using blending modes should be clear as ever!
But this course might lack some updates and it’ll teach you the fundamentals of digital drawing. Another problem you might face is that the instructor uses the app in Spanish but luckily you’ll hear the translated version of this course so you’ll know what tool he’s using.
So, if you have an iPad and lately you’ve been wanting to start digital drawing then this could be a great course for you. But if you aim to master all the tools of Procreate then I don’t think it’ll be the best choice for you.
I really enjoyed this class .... I've taken literally hundreds of classes and Teela Cunningham is one of the best teachers I have ever taken a class from .... This was very in depth for the length of the class with clear instruction .... I definitely recommend- Tanya Nelson
I absolutely loved this course. It's fun yet quite comprehensive. And honestly, this class seemed to be the most comprehensive class to learn the fundamentals of Procreate on Skillshare. This course covers the basics of brushes, colors, and other tools available on the interface. You’ll also get to learn through 4 fun projects and all of them include lettering (For the lettering lovers out there!). I also liked the animation project as I love making short animation projects.
If you’re new to Procreate and you want to start making digital illustrations, animations and you want to learn from SkillShare then this class should be the best choice for you. Also, don’t bother about the ratings or the number of students this class has, because it’s a new and updated class so maybe people haven't started noticing it yet.
This course is an excellent starting point for artists that are new to Procreate! It is a comprehensive guide that covers the basic tools & functions of the program as well as techniques that utilize tools (such as methods for adding shadows, light/glow, movement, special blurs, etc) that would not be as obvious for first-time digital artists! The instructor also contributes valuable insight as an artist when the moment calls for it~- Rynn Hanna
I think this one is a very learner-friendly course. This course covers the fundamental tools of Procreate and how to make a complete drawing or digital art with them. For me, it was a very very basic course. This course will give you a basic knowledge of some important Procreate tools including layers, brushes, smudge, eraser tools, setting the pressure curve, using gestures, etc. to create a complete digital drawing.
You’ll also learn basic shading and highlighting techniques. The drawing process is in real-time which will be very effective for beginners.
If you’re looking for a quick and effective course then this could be a good choice for you. And not to mention, this course will also give you a headstart to digital drawing with Procreate. So, if you’re completely new to digital drawing, you might like this course. But if you’re looking for something like a complete guide then maybe not.
This was a fascinating look into what can be accomplished with Procreate using the many different techniques that are available. I also had to delve into my artistic side to get the effects I wanted on each piece which was difficult because I have never painted before, but is why I took this course. I am happy with what I accomplished. This was a very detailed, expansive course and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to paint on their ipad. Thank you to Maurizio De Angelis, the instructor, for his excellent teaching skillsPennie McNutt
About this course- not gonna lie but I was wowed at first glance because it was something I was looking for. And trust me, you won’t find another course like this! This course will help you improve your coloring skills and get a better understanding of shading and coloring methods.
It covers various painting techniques including oil painting techniques, airbrush techniques from basics to advanced, inking, watercolor, acrylic, colored pencil, charcoal techniques, and more. You’re sure to be overwhelmed just like me! All these painting methods can add another dimension to your drawings.
After you’re cool with the basics, you definitely need this one. No matter what course you choose for the basics, make sure you enroll in this one to take your painting skills to another level. Also, you might be wondering why this course is not in the top 5 if it’s all so great. Well, those courses are more like your complete guide to mastering Procreate while this one is a descriptive guide to mastering various painting techniques on Procreate. That’s why I’m keeping it at number 7.
Fabulous class with a stack of information, tips, easy to follow examples. I will have to watch it again as there is so much information in this class it is impossible to take everything in with one sitting. I will open my Procreate page so that I dan practise each one as I watch the video. Brooke does not waste time on chit chat but she comes across as friendly and fun. I will be watching all her classes from now on.- Debra Farrell
This class is good for the basics, I’d say. It’s also a very popular class on SkillShare. Brooke Glaser is SkillShare’s crowd favorite and no wonder why. Her lessons were fun yet full of information and useful tips and tricks. You’ll learn some great shortcuts that’ll smooth out your workflow on Procreate. You’ll also learn some cool coloring tips that’ll help you all the way long.
This class can be fun yet fascinating for anyone starting with digital drawing. I think if combined with Learn How to Draw! Fun & Easy Exercises for Nailing Proportion, Shading, and More which is another class on digital illustrations by the same instructor, these two classes can be great choices for anyone eager to start digital drawing on Procreate.
Really enjoyed this class to get started without being overwhelmed by Procreate. Good explanations, helpful examples, and clear instructions!- Frauke Gier
Another very popular Procreate class on SkillShare. I think you’ll love following along with this course. As for me, I love flat illustrations so I kind of found this course helpful. I really liked the use of colors and Jarom’s workflow of making flat illustrations.
If you’re kind of intimidated about where to start from, you can take this course as it is not overstacked with information rather you’ll learn some useful tips and tricks along with the basics while working on a project.
Another one, Digital Illustration: Learn to Use Procreate 5 is a similar class by the same instructor but it covers some of the new features of Procreate 5. So if you have a subscription you might want to check it out too! If you’re looking for a project-based yet a quick guide to the fundamentals of Procreate then this could be a good choice for you.
Are you still confused, which course will suit you best? Well, don’t worry ‘cause I have special recommendations for you according to your needs!

“I picked up this course because I wanted to start drawing digitally, I thought I already knew how to draw but Austin taught me how to actually draw. Not just replicating photos, but how to construct an idea and draw from my imagination to create something truly unique and in my style.
The course is very practical based, and there's a good time balance in the videos with lectures ranging from 7-12 minutes and then an assignment. The course is taught on Procreate but is specifically designed to work with any (well developed) drawing app, and as I followed this course on Sketchable I can confirm that this is true.”- Sarah Beswick

This course is an absolute gem! It created a great first impression on me and I was not disappointed. “Excellent course! Highly recommended. As an artist with over 20 years of experience, I found Mr. Junichi Tsuneoka's style of art refreshing. Can help to relax and break up the rigidity of being stuck on photorealism artwork.”-Anonymous
When I started this course I wasn’t very sure about it but it actually turned out to be a pretty good course. There were some things that I was looking for and I actually found them in this course. One thing I still can’t decide is whether it is for beginner or intermediate level. I think it’s definitely a good course if you're just starting out with digital illustration and also if you can use Adobe Illustrator pretty well.
Now, this is a course you should not miss at any cost! Once you’re into making illustrations, maybe you’ve found your own art-style or maybe you’re just starting out, whatever stage you’re in, just watch it! Trust me it’s totally worth your money! “This course is very informative and very detailed on every step of how to do an illustration.”- Roberto Rolando Santos
I have done Jaysen’s courses before and I can assure you, your money won’t go in waste. He actually teaches you how to draw and how to draw effectively. Now, in terms of traditional illustration, this course might help you a lot on how to use different mediums for your illustrations, if you’re a total beginner. What I loved about this course is that Jaysen started off simple, gradually building up confidence in you and moving on to more complex drawings.
He demonstrates the step-by-step procedures of drawing things that might actually seem quite complex to beginners. So, in this course, you’ll actually learn while following along with your instructor.
So, basically, this course will help you with simply demonstrated ways of using different painting mediums to make complex illustrations. And if you really give some effort, I believe you can even start selling your illustrations after doing this course.
“As a beginner who gets discouraged easily, this was a great overview of how to explore different art tools and I definitely learned a few basics but feel this might be good for more intermediate too, as I definitely feel I could rewatch it after some practice and gain more from it once I'm more familiar with the foundations.”- Katy Rose
If you’re an artist or hobbyist or just randomly in drawing there’s no way you haven’t heard of Jazza! Now I’ve done quite a few illustration classes on SkillShare and this is one of the bests. In this course, Jazza will take you through a step-by-step process of making a complete illustration. There’s also another course you can take Digital Illustration: Creativity, Style, and Efficiency in Adobe Illustrator. This one I think could be a great cherry on top of your beginner’s illustration skills.
“I'm writing this review not immediately after watching the class, but a year after doing so -- and the impact on my life has been tremendous.”- Emmon Scott on watching the 2nd course in this bundle
If you’re interested in a more fun yet educative course rather than the serious ones then this bundle is for you! Learn to make illustrations of everyday objects and more but in a fun way. This bundle will offer you three courses, all taken by the same instructor.
To be honest, this isn’t a course for you if you’re looking for something serious. At least, if you can’t stop procrastinating and if you're afraid of drawing then go give it a try and you won’t be disappointed. Also, you never know where you’ll get to learn something new!
Also if you decide to take this bundle, I recommend you also take the course Color Fundamentals. I kind of liked it and who knows you might find it useful too! ( And yes, there are a lot better courses on color theories out there).
“Very professional and playful. The most fun I have had drawing in years. He got me out of my rut and gave me so many fun ideas to try. I really grew, and developed a fresh concept of excellence and pride in what I create and how I display/share it.- Mandy Steward
Another fun yet great course to watch! Domestika courses can be quite alluring from the ads! Well, I watched some but I had language issues and I don’t feel comfortable keeping pace with a course while watching subtitles. But this course is both in Spanish and English so that was a plus point for me. Now, a cool thing about this course is that by the end of this course you’ll have a sketchbook with illustrations to look back to. It’s overall a great course and a fun way to learn illustration.
Have you decided which courses you’re gonna go for? If not here’s my special recommendation for you,
Now, even after doing all these courses, there are so many things to do if you want to be a great illustration artist. Firstly, there’s no substitute for practice. No matter how lazy you are, no matter how busy you are, manage yourself to draw at least a line every day. I got this great inspiration from The Habits of Effective Artists. Go watch it if you haven’t yet! Here are some YouTube channels you can follow: Yes I’m a Designer, Jazza, Sinix Design, Marco Bucci, Fernando Nunes, etc. There are a bunch of other great YouTube channels and these are just a few among them. I’m not even gonna say that these are the best!
Here’s another thing I’d like to share with you, it is normal to want to make great illustrations while doubting your abilities to do so and this actually leads to NOTHING at all. Instead, once you’re done with your desired courses or while you’re doing them, follow YouTube tutorials. Try to copy other people’s art-works( for educational purposes) but don’t misuse them in any way. Trust me, this will gradually help you get super skilled while understanding other art-styles and proper uses of colors. And hopefully, soon you’ll be able to create your own original artworks!
So, this was my ultimate list consisting of the best illustration courses found across the internet for beginners and artists as well. I wanted this article to be a complete guide for anyone who wants to be an illustration artist or hobbyist regardless if it's a digital illustration or traditional. Some of the illustration courses will also help those who are interested in illustrating with Adobe Illustrator.
From the above list of courses, you can actually be a good illustration artist if you do them sincerely (and with enough hard work). I hope you’ve found your desired course! And if you think I’ve missed something that definitely deserved to be on this list then do contact me. I’ll check it out and update the course list with an honest review on it!
